EASTON, PA – Lafayette's Cristin Zavocki scored 16 points leading three double-figure Leopards to a 70-49 victory over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology in women's basketball action Friday night at the Kirby Sports Center.
Zavocki, a 5-foot-7 senior guard scored 16 points; 11 coming in the first half while shooting 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Elizabeth Virgin posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and teammate LaKeisha Wright added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Jessica Spicer scored nine points shooting 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
NJIT's leading scorer was junior forward Taiwo Oyelola with a season-high 16 points, coming off the bench for the Highlanders. Kehinde Oyelola added nine points and a team-high six rebounds while point guard Jackie McCaffrey recorded six points. Three different Highlanders contributed four points.
The Highlanders struck first in the opening minutes when McCaffrey hit a three-pointer from the left wing but Lafayette's Zavocki answered back with a three-pointer of her own to knot the game at 3-3. Both teams went back and forth over the next seven minutes before Lafayette's Virgin hit a jumper at 11:09 going up one, 16-15, and then went ahead by two on a three-pointer by Zavocki, making the score 19-17. NJIT brought the score to 23-22 at the 4:15 mark when Kehinde Oyelola finished a fast break lay-up.
Trailing 29-25 at half, the Highlanders pulled within two of the home team 34-32 as Taiwo Oyelola drained a three-pointer from the top of the key. Lafayette then scored the next five points building a 37-32 lead with 14:22 left on the clock.
On the next play down the court, NJIT's Adriana Johnson hit a jumper from the baseline making the score to 37-34, with 13:13 left to play.
NJIT made it a three-point game with a basket by Tawio Oyelola at 8:07 for a 45-42 score but Lafayette answered with back-to-back baskets going up six, 50-44 with seven minutes left to go in the game.
Lafayette kept the game out of reach from the Highlanders as they took a 10-point lead on free throws sank by Garner along with eight unanswered baskets to close the game out. Gardner and Virgin each posted four points in the run.
The Highlanders are off this weekend but return back to action on Tuesday, December 9 when they travel to Albany. Tip is scheduled for 7pm. This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
