STONY BROOK, NY—The NJIT women's tennis team came away with a win and a loss Saturday at the Stony Brook Three-Way tournament on Long Island. The Highlanders defeated Saint Peter's and lost to host Stony Brook by identical 4-1 scores.
Utilizing a “four-and-one” scoring system (four singles and one doubles, as opposed to the normal six singles and three doubles). The Highlander men won all four singles matches and lost the doubles vs. Saint Peter's and they got a win from Iulia Doci at number one singles, but lost the remaining three singles and the doubles match against Stony Brook.
The Highlanders dominated singles play against Saint Peter's. Doci was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at number one, while NJIT's number two, Ana Lidon, won 6-0, 6-0 and Fanny Aizier was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in third singles. Compared to the others, Dasa Stanimirovic faced a comparative fight in fourth singles, but she, too, won comfortably, 6-3, 6-2.
Doci was the only winner for NJIT against Stony Brook, topping the Seawolves' number one, Salome Mkervalidze, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.
Lidon and Stony Brook's Erica Federgreen had an extraordinarily tight contest at second singles, but Federgreen eked out the win, going to tie-breakers in each of the first two sets, 6-7 (13-15), 7-6 (7-5), 10-7.
The Highlanders will visit Monmouth on Tuesday at 3:30 pm in West Long Branch, NJ.
