FARMVILLE, VA--The Longwood men's soccer team scored twice in each half to defeat visiting NJIT, 4-1, Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic Soccer Conference opener for both teams.
The Lancers got goals from four different players, including Harvey Headley who scored his team's final goal after having notched Longwood's first assist of the day. The other goal scorers for the home team were Kevin Chico, Brian Germain and Chris Saul. Martin Vickerton had two assists for the Lancers.
NJIT's only goal Saturday came from junior Erik Magnusson, who got the Highlanders on the board with an unassisted tally in the 83rd minute to make the score 3-1.
Each team had seven shots on goal, as Longwood freshman goalkeeper Joel Helmick made five saves to go with a team save. NJIT senior goalkeeper Josh Osit finished with three saves.
The overall shot totals favored Longwood, 17-12, while the corner kicks were 8-4 for the Lancers.
The Lancers struck first on a tally late in the 17th minute, when the freshman Kevin Chico scored unassisted for his third goal in the last four matches.
Longwood grabbed a 2-0 advantage less than six minutes later when Harvey Headley assisted Brian Germain's goal. Headley set up the play, sending a cross through the box to Germain, who was able to chip the ball over Osit.
The score remained 2-0, Longwood, from the time of the second Lancer goal midway through the first half all the way to the final nine minutes of the match, when a flurry of goals stretched the final score to 4-1.
With 8:34 left to play Longwood freshman Chris Saul came up with his first college goal, finishing off a pass from Martin Vickerton, who would later assist his team's fourth goal.
Barely a minute after Saul had made it 3-0, Magnusson, who was a first team all-ASC honoree a year ago, got the goal back for the Highlanders at 82:33. Having beaten the Longwood defense, Magnusson, one-on-one against Helmick, put the ball into the net. The goal was the second of the year for Magnusson, who extended his team scoring lead and now has two goals, three assists and seven points for the season.
Longwood's Headley and Vickerton combined for a goal off of a free kick just 33 seconds after Magnusson had pulled the Highlanders back to within two goals of the lead.
In all, the teams combined for three goals in a span of 1:30, starting with Saul's score at 81:36.
NJIT's next contest will be a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 7 pm in Philadelphia at Saint Joseph's (PA).
