NJIT’s Romero, Sutherland and Granizo Sweep Atlantic Soccer Conference Awards

NEWARK, NJ -- NJIT's Eddie Romero, Ryan Sutherland, and Luis Granizo have swept the Atlantic Soccer Conference weekly awards the conference announced today.

 

This is the first honor for each of the Highlanders.

 

Eddie Romero has been honored as Player of the Week posting a goal in each of NJIT's two victories last week.

 

Romero knocked home the game-winner for the Highlanders in a 2-1 win over Rutgers Wednesday.  The goal was Romero's 10th career goal and second of the season.

 

On Saturday, NJIT defeated conference opponent Howard 4-0, where Romero collected his second goal of the week.  Romero was brought down inside the box and was awarded a penalty kick where he blasted the ball just underneath the crossbar, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.

 

Ryan Sutherland picks up his first Goalkeeper of the Week award, posting a 2-0 record this past week.

NJIT's fifth-year senior goalkeeper made seven big saves for the Highlanders in a 2-1 victory over Rutgers.

 

On Saturday, against conference opponent Howard, Sutherland picked up his first shutout of 2008 and the second of his career.  His first shutout came in NJIT's first-ever Division I win, a 2-0 victory over Manhattan on September 10, 2005.

 

Luis Granizo tabs Rookie of the Week honors picking up one assist against Rutgers. 

 

Granizo sent a header into the left side of the box where his teammate was positioned, sending the ball past Rutgers goalkeeper's hands.

The Highlanders will visit Bucknell on Tuesday in Lewisburg, PA, for a 7 pm match.
