NJIT Takes 3-2 Senior Night Volleyball Win

NEWARK, NJ - Kubra Tanrikulu posted a match-best 16 kills in her final home appearance, leading NJIT to a 3-2 Senior Night women's volleyball win over visiting Delaware State on Saturday in the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

NJIT's 3-2 win came on scores of 30-22, 30-26, 20-30, 21-30 and 15-11.

Tanrikulu's match-high kills total came on 54 attack attempts. Freshman Baaba Hughes had 15 kills for the second-highest total in the match in that category. Agnieszka Pregowska and Katrina Hornstein added nine kills apiece for NJIT.

Tanrikulu, who also had 10 digs, was one of four seniors honored in pre-match ceremonies. She was honored along with Ashley Craig, Rebecca Wilkinson and Kasia Rusin.

Craig, who shared the setting duties with sophomore Erica Schultz, finished with a match-best 29 assists, while Schultz ended with 15.

Wilkinson and Pregowska were the blocking leaders for NJIT, picking up three apiece on a block solo and two block assists each.

Rusin registered a kill on her only attack attempt of the match.

Sabrina Baby led the NJIT defense on the floor with 23 digs. Hughes and Hornstein each had 18 digs. Hornstein was the top server for NJIT, coming away with six aces.

Delaware State had three players with double-figure kill totals, led by Cassandra Joyner's 13. Ayana Dyette had 12 kills and Erica Tajchman picked up 11 kills.

Joyner served a match-best eight aces, leading Delaware State to 23 aces as a team.

Laura Huculak collected 24 assists and Sarah Wheatcroft had 22 for the Hornets. Huculak also served six aces.

NJIT, which will compete in the national Independent Division I postseason tournament next weekend at Utah Valley in Orem, UT, completes the regular season with a 13-21 record. The 13 wins are up from the Highlanders' first season of Division I competition when they finished 2006 at 10-21.
