LITTLE FALLS, NJ — NJIT used a four-run sixth inning to pull away for an 8-4 victory over Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon. The Highlanders finished with eight hits and capitalized on nine walks issued by the Peacocks.
With the win, NJIT improved to 6-6 on the season and secured three victories in the four-game weekend series against Saint Peter's, which dropped to 1-10.
Tyler Kim earned the win in relief, tossing three strong innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. Brandon Peterson and Nelson Smith each worked an inning to start the game, combining to allow two hits and two walks without surrendering an earned run. Anthony Catalano recorded two outs in the eighth before Brendan Opat pitched the final inning to secure the win.
Austin Francis led NJIT with three RBIs, highlighted by his sixth-inning double. Ty Sallie scored twice and added a double, while Jack Stead collected two hits and drove in two runs.
NJIT opened the scoring in the third inning. Andrew Hart walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Sheehan O'Connor laid down a bunt single. A balk allowed Hart to score, and Cole Campbell followed with a sacrifice fly that plated O'Connor to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.
Saint Peter's answered in the fourth when Steve Polizzi launched a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Peacocks took their only lead of the game in the fifth, scoring two runs on three singles to move in front, 3-2. NJIT responded quickly as Ty Sallie doubled and later scored on a Jack Stead single. Stead finished the inning with two RBIs as the Highlanders reclaimed a 4-3 advantage.
NJIT broke the game open in the sixth. After an error kept the inning alive, Austin Francis delivered a bases-clearing double that drove in three unearned runs, extending the lead to 8-3.
Saint Peter's added a run in the ninth on a double play that allowed Chase Fogg to score, but NJIT closed out the 8-4 victory.
