NEWARK, NJ — The NJIT women's tennis team continued its strong stretch of play on Friday morning, defeating Rider, 6-1, to secure its fifth consecutive victory. The Highlanders have now won
nine of their last 10 matches as they continue to build momentum early in the Spring season.
NJIT opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
At No. 2 doubles, the Highlander duo of Paula Menendez Alvarez and Lusia Hepcal Barcan defeated Rider's Anna Bong and Elle Catanzarite, 6-3, to put NJIT on the board.
Diana Fernandes and Petra Koszo secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles over Rider's Daniela Naves Anzaldo and Samantha Killin.
NJIT dominated singles play, winning five of six matches to seal the team victory.
At the top of the lineup, Laura Wipfli posted a strong performance at No. 1 singles, defeating Lisa Dierick in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 2 singles, Menendez Alvarez continued the momentum with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jolie Marie Kaiser.
Irene Cocero delivered one of the most commanding performances of the day at No. 3 singles, defeating Daniela Naves Anzaldo, 6-1, 6-1.
NJIT closed out the match with two additional straight-set wins.
At No. 5 singles, Petra Koszo defeated Kashish Kant, 6-1, 6-2, while Lusia Hepcal Barcan wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Elle Catanzarite at No. 6 singles.
Next Up
The Highlanders will make its second road trip of the season when NJIT visits Columbia on Sunday at 1pm.
