Baseball Wins Fourth Straight with 8-4 Victory Over Saint Peter’s


LITTLE FALLS, NJ — NJIT extended its winning streak to four games Friday with an 8-4 victory over Saint Peter's at Yogi Berra Stadium behind strong pitching from Tate Jones and Anthony Anzaldi.

The Highlanders improved to 5-5 on the season, while Saint Peter's dropped to 0-9.

NJIT took advantage of three Saint Peter's errors and combined for eight strikeouts on the mound in the win.

Jones earned the win (2-0), allowing one earned run on five hits over six innings while striking out four and issuing no walks. Anzaldi recorded the save (1) with three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

The Highlanders struck first in the opening inning. Ty Sallie walked and stole second before Austin Francis also drew a walk. Cole Campbell singled to load the bases, and Can cleared them with a three-RBI double to give NJIT a 3-0 lead.

Saint Peter's answered in the second on an RBI triple from Steve Polizzi to cut the deficit to 3-1.

NJIT added to its lead in the fourth when Rowin O'Connor doubled to left field to score Brody Levin, making it 4-1. 

The Highlanders extended the advantage in the fifth as Francis singled and scored on a Campbell RBI single before Can delivered his second RBI double of the game to push the lead to 6-1.

NJIT made it 7-1 in the sixth after Andrew Hart, pinch running for Levin, advanced to third on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Francis.

Saint Peter's rallied for three runs in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI single from Luke Schwartz, to trim the lead to 7-4. NJIT answered in the bottom half when Sheehan O'Connor delivered an RBI single to restore a four-run cushion at 8-4.

Both teams were held scoreless over the final two innings.

Can led the Highlanders offensively with two doubles and four RBIs. Campbell finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Francis scored twice and drove in a run.
