Women’s Tennis Wins Third Straight; Edges Visiting Fordham, 4-3

NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's tennis team continued its strong play at home, edging visiting Fordham, 4-3, Sunday morning at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

The Highlanders improved to 8-2 overall, 7-2 at home after its seventh victory in the last eight outings. 

"The Fordham team is a remarkably accomplished program, " said head coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald. "Our team displayed outstanding composure, discipline and resolve.  They executed with precision in the most critical moments and competed with determination from start to finish.  This was a win earned through preparation, belief and collective effort and I am extremely proud of how the girls presented our program and themselves today."

NJIT controlled both doubles and singles play Sunday morning, showcasing depth across the lineup to secure the team victory.

NJIT claimed the doubles point with wins at first and second doubles. 

At No. 1 doubles, Irene Cocero and Laura Wipfli teamed up to defeat Nevena Kolarevic and Julianne Nguyen, 6-4. The momentum carried over to the No. 2 spot, where Feyza Aydin and Paula Menendez Alvarez edged Lilianna Chitambar and Valerija Maija Kargina in a tightly contested 7-6 battle, prevailing in the tiebreak to secure the result. 

In singles play, at the top position, Wipfli battled Kolarevic in a three-set thriller. Wipfli opened with a 6-4 first set, dropped the second 4-6, and regrouped in a decisive third-set tiebreak to win 7-6, clinching a hard-fought point at No. 1 singles. 

Menendez Alvarez secured a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Paola Ueno Dalmonico 7-5, 6-4.

Cocero delivered a strong comeback performance at No. 3 singles. After falling 5-7 in the opening set to Catalina Padilla Udaeta, Cocero responded with a 6-4 second set and dominated the decider 6-1 to capture the match. 

Fordham combined for wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles.

NJIT will wrap up its six-match homestand on March 4 vs. Holy Cross (11am) and March 6 vs. Rider (10am).
