NEWARK, NJ — The NJIT women's tennis team picked up its second straight win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Stony Brook, 5–2, at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
NJIT (3–1) secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and went on to earn four singles wins at the first, second, fourth, and sixth spots.
Head Coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald said: "We always look forward to playing the Stony Brook team," They are well coached and hard-working competitors. I was really proud of everyone today and how much effort the team gave. They worked hard and played disciplined matches. The support they gave each other as teammates is wonderful to see. Good win for the Highlanders today!"
At No. 1 doubles, Laura Wipfli and Irene Cocero teamed up for a 7–5 victory, while Paula Menendez Alvarez and Feyza Aydin cruised to a 6–1 win at the second position.
Wipfli continued her strong play in singles, earning a dominant 6–1, 6–1 straight-set win at No. 1 singles over Elena Lobo Corral.
Menendez Alvarez battled through three sets at No. 2 singles, posting a 6–4, 4–6, 6–2 victory over Mia Palldino.
Aydin also went the distance at No. 4 singles, rallying for a 5–7, 6–1, 6–0 win against Sanjana Devneni.
Freshman Diana Fernandes at No. 6 singles, bounced back after dropping the opening set to defeat Mila Charles, 4–6, 6–2, 1–0 (10-point tiebreak).
The Highlanders will wrap up their five-match homestand on Saturday, February 14, with an 11 a.m. match.
