TOWSON, Md. - The NJIT men's lacrosse team (1-0) opened the season with a 22-8 win over Hampton (0-2) on Tuesday at Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium.
NJIT jumped out to a fast start, outscoring Hampton, 9-1, in the first quarter, including four goals in the final three minutes. Freshman
Will Corry recorded a hat trick in the first quarter.
The Pirates struck first in the second quarter with two straight goals and held the Highlanders scoreless until Corry netted his fourth goal of the game at the 9:58 mark. NJIT carried a 13-4 lead at halftime.
The Highlanders continued their strong play in the second half, highlighted by a dominant seven point half from freshman
Blake Piscitiello.
Wyatt Viste scored two goals in the fourth quarter, while
Carson Bowley added a man-up goal with nine seconds remaining.
Piscitiello led NJIT with eight points (3 goals, 5 assists), the most by a Highlander in his collegiate debut in program history. Corry added a game-high six goals and one assist.
Defensively,
Sullivan O'Brien recorded four caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Alexander Cartwright,
Colin Lowe, and Piscitiello each collected four ground balls. Goalkeeper
Cameron Kurdyla made a career-high 17 saves.
Nirio Garcia (16-of-18) and
Michael Gaffney (11-of-15) combined to win 81.8% of their faceoffs. NJIT outshot Hampton 73-35 and held a 61-28 edge on ground balls.
Darius Stanley led Hampton with five points (3 goals, 2 assists). Goalkeeper Miles Lancaster made 29 saves.
