NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT women's tennis team earned a decisive 6-1 victory over visiting LIU on Saturday morning inside the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
The Highlanders set the tone early by capturing the doubles point with strong performances on the top two courts. At first doubles, Laura Wipfli and Irene Cocero combined for a commanding 6-1 victory. Paula Menendez Alvarez and Feyza Aydin followed with a convincing 6-2 win at the second spot to secure the early advantage.
NJIT carried that momentum into singles play, winning six of seven matches on the day.
Wipfli delivered a dominant performance at first singles, earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ksenia Rezintskaya. Menendez Alvarez was equally steady at second singles, posting a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Cocero added a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at the third position, while Aydin secured a straight-set 6-3, 7-6 victory at fourth singles, closing out a tight second-set tiebreak.
Lusia Hepcal Barcan battled through the most dramatic match of the afternoon, rebounding after dropping the opening set to claim a 6-7, 6-0, 10-3 win in a third-set match tiebreak.
