NEWARK, NJ – Visiting FDU slipped past NJIT, 4-3, Friday morning in non-conference women's tennis action at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
FDU secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, then captured three singles matches at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions to halt the Highlanders' four-match win streak.
Laura Wipfli and Irene Cocero each posted two victories to lead NJIT. The duo teamed for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
Wipfli, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, rebounded from a 6-2 opening-set loss at No. 1 singles to dominate the final two sets, 6-2, 6-0, and earn the point.
Cocero battled through three sets at No. 3 singles, claiming the first in a tiebreak, 7-6, before dropping the second, 6-3. She sealed the match with a 6-4 win in the deciding set.
At No. 2 singles, Paula Menendez Alvarez also went three sets. After a 6-1 first-set win, she fell 6-4 in the second before closing out the match, 6-2, in the third.
