NEWARK, NJ – The NJIT women's tennis team won its third consecutive match Saturday, defeating Saint Joseph's, 6-1, at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
The Highlanders improved to 4-1 on the season.
"The team played strong doubles today and carried that energy into singles," said head coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald. "Singles was very disciplined against a hard-hitting Saint Joseph's team."
NJIT swept all three doubles matches to take the early point. Irene Cocero and Laura Wipfli led the way with a 6-0 win at first doubles. Feyza Aydin and Paula Menendez Alvarez earned a 6-3 victory at second doubles, while Diana Fernandes and Petra Koszo secured a 6-2 win at third doubles.
In singles play, the Highlanders won five of six matches. Wipfli posted a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory over Wiktoria Czerny at first singles. Menendez Alvarez followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2, and Cocero completed a double-win day with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at third singles.
Aydin battled to an 11-9 third-set tiebreak victory at fourth singles, topping Amari O'Brien, 6-3, 5-7, 11-9.
