Highlanders Battle in Doubleheader at Longwood on Saturday Night

FARMVILLE, VA -- The NJIT baseball team falls to Longwood in doubleheader with a 3-2 loss in a 15-inning game one and a 15-0 loss in 7 innings of game two. 

Game 1: Longwood 3, NJIT 2 (15 inn.)

In game one of the doubleheader, the Lancers struck first with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

The Highlanders chipped away in the fifth with Sheehan O'Connor reaching first after being hit by a pitch and later scored on a Ty Sallie RBI fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Highlanders evened the score in the sixth when Austin Francis singled and later came around to score on a Brody Levin fielder's choice, tying the game at 2-2.

From there, the game turned into a bullpen duel with the Highlanders using four pitchers in the contest. The four arms combines for 16 strikeouts and holding the Lancers to just six hits across 15 innings. Brandon Peterson struck out four over four innings in his start, Mark Scamardella added three scoreless innings, Anthony Anzaldi was dominant in relief, tossing 3.1 shutout innings with five strikeouts and no hits allowed and Tade Riordan battled through four innings in extras, allowing just one run while striking out four.

After the Highlanders stranded two runners in the top of the 15th, the Lancers capitalized in the bottom half. A lead off single and a base hit down the left-field line brought home the winning run, ending the marathon contest at 3-2.

Austin Francis paced the Highlanders offensively, finishing 3-for-6 with a run scored. Jack Stead collected two hits, while Dillon Can added two of his own as the Highlanders totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.

The 15-inning contest marks the second longest game in program history with the longest game in program history dating back to May 5, 2012 when the Highlanders took down Texas-Pan American in 18 innings. 

Game 2: Longwood 15, NJIT 0 (7 inn.)
In the final game of the series, the Lancers used a pair of big early innings to take control of the contest, scoring eight runs in the first and six more in the second to build a 14-0 advantage.

The Lancers added its final run in the fifth to account for the 15-0 margin.

The Highlanders recorded five hits in the contest, with Jack Stead leading the way with a 2-for-3 performance. Ty Sallie, Austin Francis and Connor Klock each added a hit for the Highlanders.
