NEWARK, N.J. -- Both NJIT and UMBC came into Thursday night's match looking to jump over .500 in America East Conference play, and it was the visiting Retrievers who pulled ahead, claiming a 1-0 victory at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
Zoe Brossman scored on a ball from Brooke Clagett in the 38th minute to provide the game's lone goal. UMBC owned the advantage in shots (19-7, 10-2) and corners (6-0).
NJIT honored Morgan's Message during Thursday's match. A movement started in honor of Morgan Rodgers -- a former Duke lacrosse player who passed away far too soon of suicide -- Morgan's Message is dedicated to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health in the student-athlete community. The Highlanders wore Morgan's Message shirts during warmups, talked to youth girls soccer players from Morris Elite during pregame, and the NJIT SAAC set up a table activation on the concourse spreading Morgan's Message.
In goal, NJIT's
Penelope Krieger made 9 saves against an active UMBC offense to keep the Highlanders alive throughout the night. Amara Codd saved both NJIT shots on target to preserve the shutout for UMBC.
NJIT falls to 4-6-1 (1-2-0) on the season, while UMBC improves to 8-3-2 (2-1-0). Both teams, however, are inside AEast postseason contention as the conference schedule reaches the midway point this weekend.
Thursday night snapped NJIT's 3-game win streak against UMBC. The Retrievers return to Maryland with their first victory over NJIT since October 2022.
The all-time series, however, remains as close as close can be. In 9 matches, no result between the two teams has ever been decided with greater than a one-goal difference. NJIT still leads it, now 4-3-2 over UMBC.
