NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT women's tennis team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon, edging visiting Quinnipiac, 4-3, at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
Quinnipiac claimed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Highlanders responded with four singles victories to secure the match. NJIT earned wins at first, second, third, and sixth singles to clinch the 4-3 decision.
Head Coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald said:
"After a disappointing doubles point loss, it was remarkable to see such outstanding singles performances—especially from the top three spots on the team. It was a long weekend of really solid tennis for the NJIT women."
Senior Laura Wipfli continued her strong play in 2026, earning a straight-sets victory at first singles over Willow Renton, 6-4, 7-6.
At second singles, Paula Menendez Alvarez also picked up a straight-sets win, defeating Isabella Baker.
Senior Irene Cocero delivered a 7-5, 6-3 victory at third singles against Anagha Shankar.
Freshman Diana Fernandes sealed the match at sixth singles. After dropping the opening set, 6-4, Fernandes rebounded with back-to-back 6-3 set victory.
