NEWARK, NJ–Visiting Rutgers defeated NJIT, 5-2, on Friday afternoon in women's tennis action at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

Rutgers (1-1) secured the doubles point with victories at first and third doubles to take an early 1-0 lead, then clinched the match with singles wins at the second, fourth, fifth and sixth positions.

NJIT (1-1), coming off its first win of the season last weekend against Seton Hall, earned singles victories at the first and third spots.

Senior Laura Wipfli, the reigning Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week, battled through three sets at first singles, defeating Mai Nguyen, 6-0, 6-7, 7-5.

The Highlanders' other singles win came from senior Irene Cocero, who posted a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Karina Jumazhanova at third singles.
