LOWELL, MA – The NJIT men's basketball team takes down UMass Lowell, 73-64, to improve to 3-1 in America East play on Thursday night.
It was a low scoring affair to start this America East matchup with both teams struggling from the field to start the game.
It was 13-9 with under ten minutes left in the first half before sophomore
Ari Fulton took control and created shots on all levels of the floor. Fulton knocked down back-to-back threes to spark what was a quiet Highlanders offense into extending their lead to double digits.
Fulton finished the half with 15 points on 4-6 shooting from the field and the Highlanders led 36-17. This marks the largest halftime lead for the Highlanders against a Division 1 opponent in the Coach Billmeier era.
Coming out of the break the River Hawks opened on a 13-4 run to shrink the Highlanders' lead to ten at the 16-minute mark.
The veteran experience of junior
Sebastian Robinson, who also made his first start of the season, was able to settle the offense down using his ability to drive and draw contact to keep the Highlanders lead in double figures.
The final ten minutes of play was filled with both teams exchanging runs. The River Hawks used a 5-1 run to get the Highlanders lead down to nine however a big dunk from graduate student
Melvyn Ebonkoli powered a 5-0 Highlander run to grow the lead back to 13.
Leading the way for the Highlanders was Fulton who set a new career-high with 24 points on 6-12 shooting from the field. Robinson followed with 20 points, marking his second straight game scoring 20+ and his third in his last four.
