LOWELL, Mass. - The NJIT women's soccer team (5-2-3, 0-0-1 AE) opened America East play with a 1-1 draw at UMass Lowell (3-3-3, 0-0-1 AE) on Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field.
NJIT struck first in the 7th minute, as
Emily Jozak scored her second goal of the season, assisted by
Maria Nogueira and
Sofia Mignon.
UMass Lowell responded in the 32nd minute with a long-range goal from Gaby Eckroth, leveling the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Jozak appeared to score again in the 60th minute, but an offsides call kept the game tied. Eleven minutes later, Riverhawks goalkeeper Rachel Welch made two crucial saves on shots by
Kelsey Ramos and
Riley Jones to keep the match tied.
In the final minutes, freshman goalkeeper
Enya Carthy made two critical saves to preserve the draw for NJIT. She finished with four saves on the day.
Jozak and Ramos each recorded two shots on goal. Carthy,
Merle Hueser,
Kennedy Westbrook,
Sofia Mignon, Nogueira, and
Kennedy Yon played the full 90 minutes.
UMass Lowell led in shots (12-11) and possession (68%-32%), while NJIT held the advantage in shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (5-3).

NJIT will host its America East home opener against UAlbany on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1:00 p.m. at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
