Smithfield, R.I. – Cole Campbell ripped an RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning to score what proved to be the game-winning run in a 7-6 NJIT victory on Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders had built a five-run cushion before Bryant stormed back to tie it prior to Campbell's triple.
How it Happened
The Highlanders jumped out early in the ballgame, as
Mason Wolf went to the opposite field for a two-run home run to give NJIT a 2-0 lead. Bryant would get a run back in the second, but the Bulldogs' offense was held in check by
MT Morrissey through the early going. In the fifth, NJIT posted a crooked number to gain some distance from the home side, using a pair of two-run singles from
Ty Sallie and
Jack Stead to extend the lead to 6-1.
Bryant would rally back, plating a run in the fifth on a home run and four runs in the seventh to level the score at 6-6. In the eighth, Stead opened the inning with a walk and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Campbell stepped up a ripped a 1-1 pitch to the wall in right field, scoring Stead with the go-ahead run to give NJIT a 7-6 lead.
Anthony Anzaldi, who came on to stop the bleeding in the seventh, got the final six outs to pick up the victory.
