THIBODAUX, LA–Fourth-seeded NJIT is heading to the 2025 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Semifinals after defeating fifth-seeded UTRGV Tuesday morning at The Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
The Highlanders, making their fourth consecutive trip to the Southland Conference Tournament, will make their second semifinal appearance on Thursday.
NJIT earned the doubles points at first and third spots and won three singles matches to register the 4-2 victory and advance to the semifinals.
The Highlanders clinched the match at fourth singles as junior Irene Cocero went the distance, battling out a three-set tilt to give the Highlanders the win with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
In doubles action, Cocero and Laura Wipfli went 6-0 at the top spot and Feyza Aydin and Paula Menendez Alvarez edged out a 7-6 (8) victory at third doubles.
Wipfli won in straight sets at first singles, 6-3, 7-5 and Menendez Alvarez was also a straight set winner at second singles, 6-3, 6-4.
