NEWARK, NJ–NJIT, the No. 4 seed in the 2025 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Postseason Tournament will begin action on April 23 at 10am against No. 5 seed UTRGV.
Match Information
All matches will be played at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Nicholls State will serve as the host school.
NJIT Notes
–NJIT finished the regular season with a 12-5 overall record and 9-0 at home inside The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility
–The Highlanders won a stretch of nine matches in a row from February 1 to March 8
–NJIT concluded the season winners of the last four out of five matches, heading into the Southland Conference Tournament
–Doubles pair Irene Cocero and Laura Wipfli were crowned Southland Conference Doubles Champions Sunday at the 2024 Southland Conference Individual Tennis Championships on October 24, 2024. The duo advanced to the 2024 ITA Masters Championships.
–Cocero and Paula Menendez Alvarez each reached 10 wins in singles competition. Cocero combined for a 10-4 overall record (7-3 at 4th singles; 3-0 at 3rd singles) while Menendez Alvarez finished (4-1 at 1st singles; 6-5 at 2nd singles)
–In doubles, Menendez and Feyza Aydin posted an 8-3 mark (all at the third spot). The pair has won the last five matches.
–Cocero and Wipfli went 7-2 at first doubles and are winners of the last four in a row
–The 2025 season marks the fourth time the Highlanders will be competing in the Southland Conference Postseason Tournament
–In 2021, NJIT was the fourth-seed, picked up a win in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals and advancing to the Southland Conference Championship Match
–The Highlanders were seeded No. 5 in the 2023 Southland Tournament and last season NJIT was seeded No. 4.
UTRGV Notes
–UTRGV enters postseason with a 9-7 overall record and 6-3 in the Southland Conference
–Kristal Dule leads UTRGV in singles competition with a 9-6 mark (2-1 1st singles, 3-4 2nd shingles and 4-1 at 3rd singles)
–Two players – Madeleine Joffe and Rhea Makesar are both 8-8 in singles action.
–The top doubles team features Makesar and Mariia Bakhtina with an 11-3 overall record (6-3 at 1st doubles, 5-0 at 2nd doubles)
–The 2025 season marks the first season UTRGV competed in the Southland Conference Tournament. Previously, UTRGV competed in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC)
