Vestal, N.Y. – In a back-and-forth affair, the NJIT baseball team dropped its series finale at Binghamton on Sunday afternoon, 8-7.
How it Happened
The Highlanders came out of the gates strong, tallying the first run of the game within the first two batters.
Cole Campbell led off the game with a double, and
Ray Ortiz followed with a two-bagger of his own to put NJIT ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. Binghamton would respond in the bottom half, posting a four spot to hold the lead after an inning.
In the fourth, the Highlanders would get a run back on an infield single from
Ty Sallie. The Bearcats would answer back again in the bottom of the fourth with a bases loaded walk to regain their three-run advantage.
NJIT pieced together unanswered runs starting in the fifth, when Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice to score the third Highlander run of the game. A three-run sixth would then give NJIT the lead, the first run coming courtesy of a
Jack Stead RBI single.
CJ Wisniewski and
Andrew Hart each would later record back-to-back RBI groundouts, the latter of which put the Highlanders back ahead. In the eighth, the lead would grow to two on a
Jake Meyers RBI single.
Binghamton would mount a late rally, as a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning tied the score at 7-7. After a clean top of the ninth, the Bearcats loaded the bases in the bottom half with an opportunity to win the game. A bases loaded walk worked by Todd Abraham gave Binghamton the 8-7 victory.
