Highlanders Flex Offensive Muscles in Win at Hofstra, 12-4

Hempstead, N.Y. – Four different Highlanders recorded three or more base hits as the NJIT baseball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 12-5 win over Hofstra on Wednesday afternoon.

Cole Campbell paced the Highlander offense, going 4-for-5 with an RBI out of the leadoff spot in the batting order. Austin Francis, Jack Stead and Mason Wolf each collected three hits and drove in multiple runs.

How it Happened
NJIT came out swinging early, plating three runs in the top of the first. After Campbell tripled to open the ballgame, Wolf roped a double to the wall in center to open the scoring. After a walk put two runners aboard, Francis laced a two-run double to cap the early NJIT rally. Hofstra would answer with a pair in the bottom half, but a Campbell RBI single in the second helped the Highlanders get the run back.

The Highlanders stretched their lead in the middle innings. In the fourth, RBI singles from Francis and Stead pushed NJIT's lead up to three, 6-3. In the fifth, the Highlanders broke the game open. With runners at the corners, NJIT executed a double steal where Jaden Caballero came across to score as Campbell swiped second base. Two batters later, Wolf clubbed a two-run home run to push the Highlander lead up to 9-3. Later in the frame, Stead drove home his second run of the game with an RBI single to left. After a walk to Landon Parker loaded the bases, Caballero was hit by a pitch to push across the fifth NJIT run of the inning.

In the sixth, Ray Ortiz crushed his 13th home run of the season and the 39th of his career to make it a 12-3 Highlander lead. The home run tied Ortiz with Luke Longo for the most in a career in program history.
