NEWARK, N.J. - Will Labartino and
Ethan Kaban each recorded hat tricks for NJIT (1-10, 0-5 AE), but the Highlanders fell to UMBC (7-3, 5-1 AE), 19-11, on Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
JC Echezuria scored his 13th goal of the season to put the Highlanders on the board at the 12:39 mark in the first quarter. However, UMBC responded with a 5-1 run to close the period, taking a 6-2 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first half of the second quarter until
Alystair Hemberger notched his 11th goal of the season at the 8:45 mark. UMBC then added three more goals before Kaban scored the first goal of his collegiate career off a rebound. The Retrievers led 9-4 at halftime.
NJIT opened the second half with three straight goals - one from Hemberger and two from Labartino - to cut the deficit to 9-7. However, UMBC answered with an 8-1 run to put the game out of reach.
Echezuria (1 goal, 3 assists), Labartino (4 goals), and Kaban (3 goals, 1 assist) each recorded four points. Hemberger (2 goals) and
Benjamin Roberts (1 goal, 1 assist) each tallied two points.
Emmerick Dopona recorded two caused turnovers, marking the fourth time in the last five games he has recorded two or more caused turnovers.
Jordan Galloway led UMBC with six points (2 goals, 4 assists).
UMBC outshout NJIT 47-32, held a 26-16 advantage in ground balls, and won 21-of-34 (61.8%) faceoffs.
