NEWARK, NJ--The NJIT women's tennis team extended its win streak to eight matches, edging visiting Delaware 4-3 on Saturday at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
NJIT improves to 8-2 on the season and 7-0 at home while Delaware moves to 7-4.
The Blue Hens earned the doubles point with wins at first through third but the Highlanders responded and swept four out of the six spots in singles competition to pull off the win.
Junior Laura Wipfli registered a 7-6, 6-3 win at the first spot over Blue Hens Maryia Hrynashka, who is currently #61 in the ITA Rankings. Paula Menendez Alvarez combined for a 6-3, 7-5 victory at second singles. Irene Cocero battled through at the fourth spot and came out on top in a three-set tilt, 5-7, 6-4, and 7-5. Graduate Arina Babkova clinched the match for the Highlanders by picking up a 7-6, 6-2 victory at the fifth spot.
"The women have been working hard and today it showed. We dropped the doubles point but had some outstanding singles performances against a very seasoned University of Delaware team." said Head Coach Patricia Piorkowski McDonald.
