NEWARK, N.J. - Evan Schmitt recorded the first five points (3 goals, 2 assists) of his career in a 19-8 loss to Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
After Vermont scored the first two goals,
Alystair Hemberger tallied his seventh goal of the season at the 9:41 mark in the first quarter.
Will Labartino also scored for NJIT in the first period, but the Catamounts led 6-2 after 15 minutes.
Vermont outscored NJIT 8-1 in the second quarter, taking a 14-3 lead at halftime.
Labartino was the first Highlander to score in the second half, with 45 seconds left in the third quarter. He recorded the first hat trick of his collegiate career.
Michael Rettberg scored his first goal of the season at the 10:50 mark of the fourth quarter. Schmitt tallied three goals in the fourth quarter.
Vermont outshot NJIT 49-48, held a 36-30 advantage in ground balls, and won 18-of-31 (58%) faceoffs.
