Box Score Wilmington, N.C. - The NJIT men's tennis team suffered a defeat at the hands of UNC Wilmington, 5-0, on Thursday afternoon.
NJIT was paced in doubles action by Soma Fukuhara and Oscar Callo con Platen, who picked up their second victory of the week. They defeated UNCW's duo of Alex de Gabriele and Trey Mallory in No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (12-10), outlasting the Seahawks in a tiebreak. UNCW was able to claim the doubles point by winning in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, including besting NJIT in another tiebreak scenario over German Lopez Andujar and Severin Risan.
"Tough day today," said Head Coach Marco Matteucci. "We had some match points to close out the doubles in our favor but it did not go our way. The wind picked up during singles and we struggled with that being our first outdoor match. I feel the guys competed hard and we just have to use this to learn and make adjustments for our next match on Saturday."
