BURLINGTON, Vt. - Kara Thompson scored her first collegiate goal in the 47th minute, but the NJIT women's soccer team (5-4-6, 0-2-3 AE) suffered a 3-1 loss to Vermont (6-3-4, 4-0-1 AE) on Thursday night at Virtue Field.
How it Happened
Vermont opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, when Sydney Remington tallied her sixth goal of the season.The Catamounts doubled their lead on a goal from Lauren DeGroot in the 43rd minute, assisted by Emma Warren.
NJIT had a chance to cut into the deficit just before halftime, but a diving save by Vermont goalkeeper Kylee Carafoli denied
Briana Andreoli in the final minute, keeping it 2-0 at the break.
Thompson responded early in the second half, scoring from just outside the box in the 47th minute.
Lily Maccausland and
Emily Jozak were credited with the assists.
Vermont added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, as Madeline Gardner found the back of the net off a feed from Remington.
Freshman goalkeeper
Enya Carthy made five saves for the Highlanders in the first half. Jozak led NJIT with four shots. Maccausland,
Merle Hueser,
Kennedy Westbrook, and
Maria Nogueira played the full 90 minutes.
Vermont led in shots (23-10), shots on goal (10-5), and possession (57%-43%), while NJIT held a slight edge in corner kicks (6-5).
Next Up
NJIT will return home to face Bryant on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
