South Orange, NJ – The NJIT women's volleyball team opened up play at the Seton Hall Classic on Friday afternoon, falling in three sets to Kent State.
Set one saw the Golden Flashes open up a nine point lead, 21-12, before the Highlanders were able to close the gap and pull within six late in the frame. However, it was not enough as Kent State grabbed momentum back to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
Set two started well for the Highlanders, getting out to a 5-1 lead after an
Ema Torres kill. The score would stay close for much of set two, however Kent State would rally late to claim the set victory, 25-17. The Golden Flashes would control set three, 25-15, to claim the straight sets victory.
Torres and
Ines Varela each led the Highlanders with six kills apiece, with Varela also contributing with a pair of blocks.
Finley McAndrew led NJIT with 18 assists to go with a pair of kills, while
Doga Emil's 11 digs paced the team.
The Highlanders will square off with the hosts Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon with first serve set for 3 p.m. The match will be streamed live on FloSports.
