SOUTH ORANGE, NJ–Host Seton Hall swept visiting NJIT, 3-0, on the second day of the Seton Hall Classic inside Walsh Gymnasium.
The Pirates won in straight sets – 25-12, 25-18 and 25-23, improving to 2-3 overall while the Highlanders moved to 1-6 on the young season.
Leading the way for the Highlanders offensively was Sara Siefert and Ilayda Dincer with six kills while Taylor West and Ines Varela added four kills. Varela combined for a .375 hitting percentage with two blocks.
Freshman Finley McAndrew combined for a double-double with 16 assists and 15 digs while libero Doga Emil registered 14 digs. Siefert added eight digs.
In the first frame, both teams traded points early in the set until the Pirates rallied off four straight points for a 9-5 lead and extended its advantage to nine, 18-9. Seton Hall scored the final seven out of nine points to take the first set, 25-12.
NJIT opened up the second set to a 4-1 lead but Seton Hall had an 8-1 run to push ahead by four, 9-5. The Highlanders stayed within two points of the Pirates through the early teens, scoring four consecutive points, knotting the set at 14-all. Seton Hall took control using an 11-4 run to close out the set to go up, 2-0, with a 25-18 victory.
Both teams went back-and-forth to start the third set with the Highlanders scoring four straight to take a 10-8 lead. Through the mid-teens neither team led by more than one until after the final tie at 20-20, when Seton Hall used a 5-3 run to secure the 3-0 sweep with a 25-23 victory.
NJIT will conclude the Seton Hall Classic on Sunday at 1pm when the Highlanders face Sacred Heart at 1pm.
