NJIT Women’s Soccer Falls Short In Comeback Attempt Against Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The NJIT women's soccer team (3-2-1) fell short in a comeback attempt against Wagner (1-3-2), losing 3-2 on Thursday night at Hameline Field.
 
Wagner scored three goals in the first half, starting with Izzy Gomez in the seventh minute to give the Seahawks the lead. Then, Wagner's Alana Arjona scored a goal from 30 yards out in the 26th minute, assisted by Gomez. Eight minutes later, Kennedy Westbrook fouled a Wagner player in the box, resulting in a penalty kick that Anayah Rivera converted to give the Seahawks a 3-0 lead.
 
NJIT's best chance in the first half came in the 41st minute when Briana Andreoli's shot toward the top of the net was saved by goalkeeper Sam Hughes, keeping the score 3-0 at halftime.
 
In the 55th minute, Maria Nogueira scored her first goal of the season and fourth of her career, assisted by Kelsey Ramos. Ramos has recorded a point in each of the last two games. 
 
Andreoli scored the 10th goal of her NJIT career in the 70th minute to make it a 3-2 game, assisted by Caroline Caputo. With her goal, Andreoli is now tied for fourth all-time in goals and ranks sixth in points in the Division I era.
 
The Highlanders had several opportunities to tie the game, with their best chance coming in the final ten seconds. Nogueira took a corner kick and Riley Jones' shot hit the post.
 
Andreoli took five shots, three of which were on target. NJIT led in shots (14-10), shots on goal (7-6), and corner kicks (8-3).

NJIT will travel to South Orange to face in-state rival Seton Hall on Sunday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m.
