SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Kennedy Westbrook recorded the first three points of her collegiate career, but the NJIT women's soccer team (3-5-1, 0-1 AE) suffered a 4-3 loss to Bryant (3-4-3, 1-0 AE) on Sunday at Beirne Stadium.
In the 12th minute, an NJIT player fouled a Bryant player in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Goalkeeper
Mojisola Ayodele made a crucial diving save on the penalty kick. Shortly after, the Bulldogs scored two goals in 35 seconds to take a 2-0 lead.
NJIT had a chance to score in the 16th minute, but
Emily Jozak's shot hit off the post.
Briana Andreoli scored the first NJIT goal off a corner kick in the 28th minute, assisted by
Riley Jones and Westbrook. This marked the 11th goal of Andreoli's NJIT career, which is fourth all-time in the Division I era. She also ranks fifth in points (26) during that same period.
Bryant's Makayla Griffin responded quickly, scoring her second goal of the game to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Westbrook scored her first career collegiate goal on a corner kick in the 61st minute, assisted by
Maria Nogueira. NJIT found the back of the net one minute later, but an offsides call kept the score at 3-2.
In the 70th minute, Bryant's Samantha Zaslaw scored the Bulldogs' fourth goal, assisted by Catherine Bean, who recorded three assists in the game.
Sofia Mignon scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 89th minute, making it a 4-3 game.
Bryant led in shots (26-21), shots on goal (10-9), and possession (53%-47%), while NJIT outpaced Bryant in corner kicks (8-5) and blocked nine shots.
