Late Rally Falls Short For Men's Lacrosse Against Merrimack

NEWARK, N.J. — Despite an early lead and a late rally attempt, the NJIT men's lacrosse team lost its fourth straight game in America East play, conceding a 15-14 defeat to the Merrimack Warriors Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

HIGHLANDER LEADERS 1ST QUARTER
  • NJIT opened the scoring with goals from Sininsky (from Miller, 13:24), a quick hat trick from Miller (from Muscatella, 12:19; from Bowie, 11:16; from Muscatella, 10:22), and Muscatella (from Gozdenovich, 10:03) to go up 5-0 in the first five minutes of the contest.
  • Merrimack stopped the Highlanders' early run with a score at the 8:16 mark and added a second (7:30) to cut NJIT's lead to 5-2.
  • Miller added his fourth tally off a Muscatella assist (3:32) to make the score 6-2.
  • The Warriors split the NJIT lead in half, 6-3, with the final goal of the quarter (0:29).

2ND QUARTER
  • Merrimack pulled within two, 6-4, with 10:09 on the clock with the first goal of the period.
  • After an NJIT penalty, the Warriors made the score 6-5 with a successful extra man opportunity (7:37) and tied the game at 6-6 less than 20 seconds later (7:20).
  • The Warriors took their first lead of the game (7-6) with another EMO conversion with 5:41 remaining and extended the lead to two (8-6) with a solo strike (4:15).

3RD QUARTER
  • Merrimack nearly netted another man-up goal, scoring a second after NJIT came back to full strength to make the score 9-6 with 14:29 on the clock.
  • The Warriors took a four-goal lead, 10-6, with another solo goal at the 13:37 mark.
  • Roberts netted his first goal and stopped the 10-1 Merrimack run on an assist from Bowie with 12:12 remaining in the frame.
  • Merrimack scored their third man-up goal of the game at the 9:08 mark to reestablish their four-goal edge, 11-7.
  • Muscatella gave NJIT their first successful extra-man opportunity with a Bowie-assisted goal at the 5:35 mark (11-8).
  • Merrimack scored again with 4:06 left to make the score 12-8.
  • Corry scored a five-on-five goal with both teams serving a penalty to cut the deficit back to three, 12-9, with 2:27 left.
  • Muscatella secured his hat trick with a wrap-around goal with 40 seconds left to pull within two, 12-10.

4TH QUARTER
  • NJIT drew a one-minute penalty at the 13:11 mark and converted on a Schutta-to-Corry connection to make it a one-goal contest, 12-11.
  • Merrimack scored three straight goals (10:44, 6:38, 5:47) to move back ahead by four, 15-11.
  • Out of a timeout, Muscatella scored off a rebounded save (1:51) to make the score 15-12.
  • Bowie got on the goals list on an assist fromCorry (1:06) and Corry scored on his own (0:52) to make it a one-goal game again, 15-14.
  • A final shot attempt by Roberts with 15 seconds remaining was saved by Merrimack, ending NJIT's furious comeback.
OTHER NOTES
  • Muscatella set a new team season and individual career high with his seven-point outing (4 G, 3 A).
  • Schutta recorded the first point of his career.
