NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team gathered in the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center on Monday night to watch the 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Selection Show on NCAA.com and learned it will head to Charlottesville, VA, to take on host and third-seeded Virginia in the first round of the tournament on Friday, May 3.

Third-year Head Coach Marco Matteucci and the Highlanders qualified for the tournament with last weekend's Southland Conference Tournament victory, defeating host and top-seeded Incarnate Word 4-3 to earn the conference's automatic berth.

Virginia, the two-time defending National Champions, heads into the NCAA Tournament 22-5 overall and 12-0 in ACC play. The Cavaliers fell 4-3 in the ACC Tournament final to Florida State.

NJIT is having its best season in program history. Not only did the squad win its first Southland Tournament and earn a spot in its first NCAA Tournament, but the Highlanders set a program-record with 19 wins to go against just five less. NJIT was a perfect 10-0 at home, playing in the Naimoli Family Tennis and Recreation Center on campus in Newark. Additionally, the Highlanders were ranked for the second time ever, and earned the best ranking in program history, climbing to as high as #57.

Pablo Perez Ramos, the MVP of the Southland Conference Tournament, has led the Highlanders both on and off the court this season. Perez Ramos is 18-2 at the top singles position for the Highlanders this season and the team captain has partnered with Wil Jenkins for a 16-3 record at the #1 doubles spot.

Jenkins, who primarily plays #2 singles, is 16-3 this season, while Oscar Callo von Platen also has 16 wins, combining for a 16-6 record, including 11-3 at #4. Other double digit singles winners for NJIT include Pavel Petrov (13) and Nejc Skorjanc (10).

In addition to being named MVP of the Southland Tournament, Perez Ramos has also been named Southland Player of the Week three times and was also named to the Southland All-Tournament Team. The redshirt freshman was joined on the Southland All-Tournament Team by Jenkins (second singles), Callo von Platen (fifth singles), and German Lopez Andujar (sixth singles). Perez Ramos and Jenkins also made the All-Tournament Team as the first doubles pair.

Virginia has been led this season by Chris Rodesch, who boasts a 15-3 singles record all at the top flight.

The start time for Friday's match between NJIT and Virginia will be at 4pm and the winner of that match will take on the winner of VCU (15-9) and Princeton (22-7) in Charlottesville on Saturday.
