Men's Lacrosse Battles With, Falls To Defending Champ Bryant, 12-8

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The NJIT men's lacrosse team put up a valiant fight against the defending America East champion Bryant Bulldogs but suffered a 12-8 defeat Saturday afternoon at Beirne Stadium.

HIGHLANDER LEADERS 1ST QUARTER
  • NJIT got on the board first, turning defense into offense as Brown set up Grimley for his first goal of the year (5:59)
  • After Bryant tied the match with 1:20 to go, Cover put the Highlanders back ahead 2-1 on an assist from Sininsky (00:35).

2ND QUARTER
  • Two Bulldog goals to start the frame gave Bryant its first lead of the contest, 3-2, at the 13:02 mark.
  • Corry leveled the match at 3-3 (11:56) with his first goal since March 2.
  • The order of action would repeat itself - two Bryant goals and another Highlander score - this time from Rettberg from Roberts - making the score 5-4 Bryant at the 7:13 mark.
  • Sininsky's first goal of the game - a solo strike - made the score 5-5 with 5:57 to go in the half.
  • Bryant scored the eventual final goal of the quarter with 4:47 remaining and went into halftime with a 6-5 advantage.

3RD QUARTER
  • NJIT opened the third quarter like they did the first, with an assisted Highlander goal. This time Muscatella netted his first off a setup from Cover at the 13:14 mark.
  • Muscatella made it a double and gave NJIT a 7-6 lead (8:29) with a leaping man-up goal off a Hone assist. 
  • Bryant tied the match for the fifth time with a goal at the 3:55 mark, making the score 7-7.
  • A late goal with five seconds remaining reestablished Bryant's lead heading into the fourth, 8-7.

4TH QUARTER
  • Two goals in the first 90 seconds and another at the 11:04 extended Bryant's lead to four, 11-7.
  • Corry's second (4:52), from Cover, stopped Bryant's extended 5-0 run and trimmed the Bulldog lead to three, 11-8.
  • Bryant netted a man up empty net goal as NJIT fended off the Bulldog extra-man advantage to set the final margin, 12-8. 

OTHER NOTES
  • Brown's assist was the first point of his storied career.

NEXT UP
NJIT will play the first of two straight home matches next week (Saturday, April 6) against Merrimack. First faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
