NJIT Men's Tennis Edged By Georgetown

Highlanders Fall 4-3

3/29/2024 6:17:00 PM

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD - The NJIT men's tennis team took on Georgetown on Friday and were edged 4-3 by the Hoyas in non-conference action at the Junior Tennis Champions Center.

The Highlanders are now 13-4 this season, while Georgetown improved to 11-5. The Hoyas also defeated NJIT 4-3 last season.

"Today was an unfortunate day for us," said NJIT Head Coach Marco Matteucci. "The guys fought hard, but we just couldn't get over the hurdle. We had a few match points, but it just didn't go our way."

Georgetown won the doubles point thanks to a pair of 6-4 victories to go ahead 1-0.

The teams split the six singles matches with NJIT earning victories at the #2, #5, and #6 positions courtesy of wins from Wil Jenkins, Oscar Callo von Platen and German Lopez Andujar

Jenkins and Callo von Platen won in straight sets, while Anjujar Lopez came from behind to win in three sets.

"With every loss there are positives and that was the fight we had today," added Matteucci. "We need to be put in these positions to be ready for the conference tournament. We hope to learn from these close matches and be ready for future matches."

The Highlanders will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they travel to Queens to take on St. John's in a second-straight matchup against a BIG EAST opponent. First serve is slated for 11am.
