BRONX, NY -- The NJIT men's tennis team turned in a strong weekend at the Fordham Invitational, highlighted by senior Severin Risan capturing the White Draw title with a perfect 4-0 record and Soma Fukuhara reaching the final of the Maroon Draw.
Risan put together an impressive run in the White Draw, winning four consecutive matches to secure the tournament championship. The senior's performance highlighted a productive weekend for the Highlanders as he continued his strong play throughout the fall season.
Fukuhara also delivered an impressive performance in the Maroon Draw, earning three victories to advance to the championship match. Fukuhara opened with a hard-fought victory over Fordham's Filip Horak, 7-6, before continuing through the draw with wins over Leon Eddie Schmidt and Mateusz Gradzki. He ultimately fell in the final to Victor Kimpel, finishing as the runner-up after a strong weekend of competition.
"Very happy for Severin to win a tournament in his senior year," said NJIT head coach Marco Matteucci. "He has been playing a lot this fall, and it was good to see him go all the way. Soma battled an injury this fall and played less, so it was great to see him have a good weekend and reach the finals. He fell short by just a few points of winning it all, but he needed this weekend to get him ready for ITA Regionals next week at Penn. It was a very solid weekend from these guys."
