BAKERSFIELD, CA - The NJIT baseball team defeated host CSU Bakersfield 6-1 on Sunday to clinch the series win in the four-game set between the two teams this weekend at Hardt Field.
NJIT starting pitcher tossed six innings of one-run ball to lead the Highlanders, who also won the first two games of the series and now sit at 5-9 this season.
The Roadrunners' only run of the game came in the third inning to give them a 1-0 lead, but the Highlanders bounced back with three runs in the fifth to take control of the game.
Two of those runs came on an RBI double off the bat of
Ray Ortiz, while the third scored on an RBI double from
Albert Choi.
Luke Longo's fifth home run of the season made the score 4-1 in the seventh before a two-RBI single from Choi made it 6-1 in the eighth.Â
Drew Standen relieved de Jong on the mound and pitched a perfect seventh inning. Standen allowed the first two batters in the eighth to reach base, but escaped any damage with a strike out and two fly outs.Â
Joe Georgini pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the Highlanders' fourth win in their last five games.Â
Five different NJIT hitters - Choi, Ortiz, Longo,
Austin Francis and
Cole Campbell - each had a pair of hits in the win.
The Highlanders will return to the diamond on Tuesday when they will finally get to show off their new home field, Yogi Berra Stadium, in Little Falls, NJ. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm against Seton Hall.Â
