Baltimore, Md. - The NJIT women's volleyball traveled down to Baltimore to continue America East play on Friday night, dropping its match to UMBC in three sets. The Retrievers staved off a late comeback attempt by the Highlanders in set one and swung momentum in their favor to take the match.
NJIT found itself down by 10 points late in set one, 20-10, before rallying back with seven of the next nine points to pull within five. UMBC dug deep to claim the first set, then used a big 7-0 scoring run midway through set two to take a commanding lead in the match. The Highlanders were able to keep things close for much of set three, but UMBC once again pieced together a late run to finish off the match in straight sets,
Mariana Cova led NJIT on the attack with nine kills and a .381 hitting percentage, nearly earning a double-double as she added 11 digs. Cova was one of three Highlanders to record double digit digs, as
Ilayda Dincer and
Campbell Walker picked up 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Cece Marino registered 21 assists on the night, and chipped in defensively with a couple of block assists.
The Highlanders return to action next Friday night for their final road match of the year as they take on UAlbany at 6 p.m.
