NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team started its 2024 season in style on Friday afternoon, defeating visiting Marist 7-0 in the Naimoli Family Tennis and Recreation Center.
The Highlanders are looking to improve upon one of their best seasons in a while after winning 15 matches in 2023.
"It was a good start to the season for us," said third-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "Everyone played well and took care of business."
NJIT got things started by earning the doubles point thanks to victories at all three positions.
Pablo Perez Ramos and
Wil Jenkins rolled to a 6-0 win at #1,
Nejc Skorjanc and
Tom Sorin were victorious via a 6-1 decision at #2 and
Pavel Petrov and
Oscar Callo von Platen edged their opponents 6-4 at #3. Sorin was competing in his first-career match.
The Highlanders carried the momentum into singles play where they earned five straight-set victories.
Jenkins 6-0, 6-1 win at #2 was the most convincing, while Perez Ramos (1), Callo von Platen (3), Petrov (4), and Kanetkar (5) also won in straight sets.
Severin Risan, who competed in his first-career match, won 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 at the number six position.
"I'm very happy for the freshmen to both get their first college dual match win and to know we have a lot of depth this season," concluded Matteucci.
The Highlanders will return to the court on Sunday when they host Rider at 2pm back in the Naimoli Tennis and Recreation Center.
