NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 5-2 non-conference victory over visiting Rider on Sunday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Recreation and Tennis Center.
"We had a nother good day today," said third-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "Rider pushed us and made us dig deep."
The Highlanders opened their season on Friday with a 7-0 victory over Marist and took the momentum into Sunday's match, sweeping their way through doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
NJIT's first doubles pair of
Pablo Perez Ramos and
Wil Jenkins made a statement with a 6-0 win, while the number two pairing of
Pavel Petrov and
Oscar Callo von Platen clinched the point with a 6-2 victory. The Highlanders third pair,
Nejc Skorjanc and
Tom Sorin, completed the doubles sweep with a 7-5 victory.
Perez Ramos and Skorjanc won in straight sets at #1 and #2 singles, respectively, while Petrov and
Ashwin Kanetkar also earned straight-set victories and #4 and #5, respectively. Both of NJIT's losses came in three sets.
The Highlanders return to action on Saturday when they take on Bucknell to open a two-day tournament hosted by Binghamton. NJIT will then take on either the host Bearcats or Siena on Sunday with the opponent being determined by Saturday's result.
"We needed to stay on our toes today and now we need to keep the momentum up," concluded Matteucci.
