Women's Soccer and Wagner Play To A Draw

NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT women's soccer team's current unbeaten streak extended to five games after the Highlanders ended their match with the Wagner Seahawks in a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

NJIT (3-1-4) was poised to take all three points from the contest after Taylor Pape and Kelsey Ramos connected on a well-executed breakthrough in the 26th minute. Pape sent a ball into the box from distance on the right side of the field that found the head of Ramos and the back of the net. That 1-0 Highlander lead stood through halftime and into the second period but Wagner (2-3-2) found an equalizer in the 53rd that slipped past backup keeper Mojisola Ayodele.

The Highlanders outshot Wagner 14-11 overall but they really ramped up their chances after the tying goal, taking more than double the number of shots Wagner did during that 30-plus minute span (9-4) - which included playing with a one woman advantage due to a 71st minute Wagner red card - but were unable to convert one shot that would have recaptured the lead.

Bailey Chant took the majority of her chances during that final push (five of her six shots came after Wagner's goal). Her final chance was her best of the game - a shot in front of goal that nearly won it for NJIT in the waning minutes but sailed right.

Despite the result, NJIT's season-long four-match homestand was an overall success. The Highlanders went 2-0-2 with one shutout and a +4 goal differential (8-4) during the four matches.

OTHER NOTES
  • The last time NJIT went at least five matches without a loss was in 2018, when the Highlanders played LIU Brooklyn to a draw in its second game of the season and proceeded to rattle off four wins in a row over Iona, Fairfield, UMass Lowell (pre-AE) and at Rider. The NJIT Division I record for longest unbeaten streak is six games, done two different ways in 2016 (4-0-2 record) and 2017 (6-0 record).
  • NJIT's goal distribution currently sits at 16 goals by 13 different players. The most diverse offensive season in Division I program history (since 2006) came last year when 14 different players scored the team's 22 goals across 19 games.
  • With Ramos and Pape connecting, the duo recorded their first points of the season - and for Pape, the first assist of her career.
  • This is now the third time this year NJIT and its opponent each finished with double digit shot attempts, and all three matches have ended in ties.
  • The last time NJIT played in a game with a red card involved was October 24, 2021 against UAlbany, when UA received a first half red before NJIT won 1-0 in overtime.

NEXT UP
NJIT will play its final non-conference match before America East play starts on Wednesday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at Columbia.
