Women's Soccer and UCR Finish Highlander Showdown With 0-0 Draw

RIVERSIDE, CA — In an inaugural cross-country Highlander showdown, the NJIT women's soccer team played California namesake UC Riverside to a scoreless draw in their first-ever meeting Sunday afternoon at UCR Soccer Stadium.

The contest may have ended without a goal but it was not for lack of trying from either side. NJIT (1-1-2) finished one shot behind UCR (0-2-2) for total chances in the game (12-11) after leading at halftime (8-7) and was even in shots on goal (4-4). The game marked the first time since 2021 that NJIT and an opponent finished with double-digit shots in a scoreless tie.

Ciara Adams led NJIT with three shots taken and two chances on frame. Bailey Chant (2 shots, 1 SOG) and Briana Andreoli (2 shots) were the other NJIT players who registered multiple opportunities to score. Mikayla Balio, Kelsey Ramos, Gabby Zalot and Riley Jones each added a shot to the NJIT tally.

Despite facing double-digit shots for the second straight game (after facing three in her first two of the year), Samantha Constantine secured her first career solo shutout with three saves and a full 90 minutes of work in net. Constantine had been a part of three combined shutouts in her career - one with Molly Saylor in 2022 and two this year with teammate Mojisola Ayodele.

UCR did hold an 11-2 edge on corner kicks, making it even more impressive that Constantine and the NJIT defense held firm to bring a point home to Newark.

TOP CHANCES
  • 44' - A nice run by Andreoli near the end of the first half led to her getting a one-touch shot on the 18-yard line that sailed just over the top of the crossbar and out.
  • 72' - After shutting down a throw-in chance on the defensive end, NJIT's transition beautifully set up a close call for Adams. Ramos lofted a ball from midfield that Andreoli was able to chase down and Andreoli laid it off for Adams about 25 yards away but Adams' shot drifted just left
  • 90' - NJIT's last shot of the game came as the Highlanders put a final bit of pressure on UCR, which led to Ramos getting a shot off within 12 yards that bounced off the crossbar on the left side

OTHER NOTES
  • The similarly high-octane, scoreless draws from 2021 happened twice that year - October 14 at UMBC and October 31 in the America East quarterfinals against New Hampshire.
  • There are three Division I Highlander programs in the country - NJIT, UC Riverside and Radford in Virginia. Neither NJIT or UCR have faced Radford in Women's Soccer, making this the first Highlander Showdown among the three schools - and hopefully not the last.

NEXT UP
NJIT returns to the east coast but will play one more game on the road before seeing the field in Newark again. The Highlanders will take on LIU in Brookville on Thursday, August 31 at 1 p.m.
