Women's Soccer Stymies LIU In 3-0 Shutout

NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT women's soccer team kicked off its four-match homestand with a strong 3-0 shutout of the LIU Sharks Thursday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The Highlanders (2-1-2) earned their second win of the year and fourth clean sheet in the first five games on the strength of goals from Bailey Chant (penalty kick), Maria Nogueira (from Chant and Ciara Adams), and Sydney Watson (from Briana Ramirez).

After not recording a solo shutout in her first eight career games, Samantha Constantine was able to secure her second straight against LIU (2-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chant netted her first goal of 2023 and tenth of her career in the 18th minute after a Briana Andreoli cross into the box was blocked into the air and handled on the way down by an LIU player to force a penalty shot. LIU's keeper guessed Chant's shot side correctly but the shot had just enough pace on it to slip by.
  • Nogueira - playing in her first game of the season after missing the first four due to injury - doubled the Highlander advantage in the 50th minute as she finished off a quality chain of passes with an outstanding run and shot. NJIT gathered a loose ball near midfield and got it to Adams, who took two touches to get it to Chant on the right side. Chant crossed a long ball over the LIU defense and into the box, meeting Nogueira in stride for a settling touch, shot and score. Nogueira's goal was the second of her career and first since scoring at Saint Peter's on September 11, 2022.
  • Watson added the final score in the 84th minute. Mikaela O'Fallon's corner was redirected in the box by Ramirez toward Watson, who had a first shot stopped but not the second. Like Nogueira, Watson's goal was also the second of her career - she scored a header off a corner kick at Wagner a year to the day (August 31, 2022).
  • NJIT had the overall better match in terms of scoring opportunities, outpacing LIU 16-6 on shots, 7-0 on shots on goal, and 9-3 on corner kicks. This marked the first time in NJIT Division I history that the Highlanders held an opponent to zero shots on goal in a multi-goal victory.

OTHER NOTES
  • The last time NJIT recorded at least three home shutouts to start a season was 2019, when the Highlanders held their opponents scoreless at the newly opened Lubetkin Field during their first four home contests. The 2023 team has actually scored one more goal in their three home shutouts (10 goals) than the 2019 squad did in their four clean sheets (9 goals).
  • Chant's PK goal was NJIT's first since October 27, 2022, when former Highlander Siani Magruder's game winner at Bryant capped off a two-goal comeback and helped NJIT clinch a place in last year's America East tournament.
  • After 180 minutes across three home matches, Constantine has yet to register a save, meaning she has not faced a shot on goal in Newark so far this season.
