No. 5 Women's Tennis Sees Season End In Southland Quarterfinals

Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The 2022-23 season for the NJIT women's tennis team came to a close as the No. 5 Highlanders were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference tournament by the No. 4 seed Northwestern State Demons, 4-0, Thursday afternoon on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

NJIT (10-8) rattled off four straight victories to close out the regular season and secure the 5-seed but ran into a formidable foe in a Northwestern State side likely looking for revenge after the 2022 regular season champions were upset by the Highlanders in last year's Southland semifinals. 

In doubles, both teams split the first two flights to finish - a 6-0 NSU win at No. 3 and a 6-3 win at No. 2 by Sandra Dzhambazov and Laura Wipfli - but the Demons eventually came away with the point after a close 6-4 win at the top spot.

Another two wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles by NSU pushed NJIT to the brink at 3-0 and a three-set battle at No. 6 between Irene Cocero and NSU's Renske Ubachs eventually ended the match before the Highlanders could catch up at No. 1 (Dzhambazov was poised to send the flight to the third set), No. 3 (Joleta Budiman only down one in the third set after winning the second) and No. 5. (Shalon Salvi was headed to the third set).
