Georgini, Ortiz Lead NJIT Past LIU to Complete Weekend Sweep

Joe Georgini Tosses Seven Shutout Innings, While Ray Ortiz Records Four Hits in 7-1 Victory

BROOKVILLE, NY - Joe Georgini tossed seven shutout innings and Ray Ortiz went 4-for-4 with three doubles while reaching base in all six plate appearances to lead the NJIT baseball team to a 7-1 victory over host LIU on Sunday afternoon.

The Highlanders completed the three-game non-conference series sweep with the win over an LIU ballclub that went to the 2022 NCAA Tournament and entered this weekend's series 8-3 in its last 11 games.

Georgini took the mound in the bottom of the first with a 3-0 lead as the Highlanders scored three times in the top of the first. Kevin Putsky scored a pair with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch to give the veteran right-hander all the run support he'd need.

The Highlanders scored four more runs over the middle three innings to go ahead 7-0, while Georgini pitched to contact and watch his defense make play after play behind him.

NJIT's fourth run came on an RBI single from Long Island native Jared Donnelly and a sacrifice fly from Brett Helmkamp in the fifth made the score 5-0. Ortiz's third double of the game scored two more runs in the sixth inning.

Georgini remained in control with scoreless sixth and seventh innings before handing the ball to Aaron Park to get the final six outs.

Park pitched well with the lead, allowing just a solo home run in his two innings of work.

In addition to Ortiz, Austin Francis and Ty Sallie also had multi-hit games for NJIT, each tallying a pair of baseknocks in Sunday's win. Luke Longo scored two more time to finish the three-game series with 10 runs scored.

NJIT will look to stay hot on Wednesday when it makes the short trek to Jersey City to take on St. Peter's. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
