SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The NJIT baseball team out-hit host Seton Hall on Wednesday, but the Highlanders were unable to capitalize as the Pirates earned the 3-0 victory on Sheppard Field in non-conference action.
Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third, plating one runner against NJIT starter
Sam Beck, who had tossed a pair of scoreless innings prior to the thid.
The Pirates added another an inning later and made it 3-0 with an unearned run in the seventh.
NJIT's best chance to score came in the in the top of the third when
Luke Longo and
Andrew Elcock hit back-to-back singles.
Jared Donnelly came to the plate with two outs and singled for the Highlanders' third hit of the inning, but Longo was thrown out at home trying to score.
Ray Ortiz led off the sixth inning with a double, but the Highlanders were unable to get the run home.
Brandon Peterson relieved Beck for the fourth and fifth innings and allowed just one run while striking out a pair.
Aaron Park came in for the sixth and seventh innings and also struck out two, while allowing just one run.
Jake Fullerton pitched the final frame and got a double play and a lineout to get out of the inning without allowing a run.
Offensively, Longo and Donnelly led the way with a pair of hits each.
NJIT returns to action this weekend with a non-conference, three-game series at LIU. Game one of the series is slated for 3pm on Friday.
