Longo, Ortiz Power NJIT to Series Opening Win at LIU

Ray Ortiz Crushes Two Home Runs, Knocks in Five While Luke Longo Hits Two Bombs and Scores Five Times

BROOKVILLE, NY - Luke Longo and Ray Ortiz combined for four home runs and nine RBIs as the NJIT baseball team broke a 3-3 tie with 11 runs in the final three innings en route to a 14-3 series opening win at LIU on Friday afternoon on Long Island.

Ortiz, who accounted for two of those home runs and five of the RBIs, got the offense going in the first inning when he hit a two-run home run that also scored Longo, who reached base via hit by pitch to lead off the game.

Longo hit his ninth home run of the season in the third inning to put the Highlanders ahead 3-0.

LIU scored an unearned run in the home half of the third and two more runs in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3 before the Highlanders broke the game open in the late innings.

Kevin Putsky hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to put NJIT back in front in the seventh and Brett Helmkamp sacrificed another run home with a squeeze bunt to put the Highlanders up two.

The big blow in the four-run eighth was a two-out, three-run home run from Ortiz, his seventh of the season.

Long Island native Jared Donnelly's two-run double in the ninth gave the Highlanders insurance, but they weren't done yet as Longo hit another bomb, this time a three-run shot to put the Highlanders up even more comfortably.

The offense wasn't the only thing working for NJIT on Friday as the pitching was also effective.

Ryan Fischer allowed just two earned runs in six innings en route to his second victory of the season. He was relieved by Grant Vurpillat, who entered with the Highlanders leading by just two and tossed a pair of shutout innings while striking out four to continue his impressive final season as a Highlander. Liam Reiner pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing just one base runner.

Longo reached base in all six of his plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with a pair of hit by pitches and coming around to score five times. Donnelly and Cole Fleming each had a pair of hits to join Longo and Ortiz with multi-hit games as the NJIT offense finished the game with 14 hits.

The Highlanders and Sharks will play game two of the series on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 2pm back at the LIU Baseball Stadium.
